Our Story

I'm Nicola Hales, the owner of Harlyn Jewellery. Our collections are designed in Berkshire and manufactured in artisan workshops in Sri Lanka.

For many years I worked in Buying for several International retailers and I had the privilege to travel to distant shores to design and select ranges. I cannot describe the feeling of excitement and joy I got from seeing a product come to life from an initial concept to the reality of being able to touch the finished item.

Of the many places that I was fortunate enough to work in, Sri Lanka is a stand-out favourite. The people are warm, welcoming, and so hardworking. The country itself is so varied - from the beautiful beaches and resorts to the bustling towns and then the chillier temperatures of the hill stations and tea plantations.

Fast forward to 2019 and I found myself redundant but bursting with energy and passion for a new challenge. Anyone who knows me understands my love for beautiful jewellery and all things that sparkle! Having received many compliments on jewellery that I have collected from previous trips to Sri Lanka, the idea of creating my own jewellery brand was conceived. The collection is designed around the amazing array of semi-precious gemstones found in Sri Lanka.

For each new collection we travel to Sri Lanka to work directly with artisan workshops in Galle and Colombo. Our designs are sent to the workshops ahead of our trips so that we are able to see physical samples before making our selections. Working in the workshops with the craftsmen and women we can hand select the ethically sourced semi-precious gemstones, monitor progress and adapt any finer details. On a recent trip we were fortunate to be invited to see a working Moonstone mine. Knowing the provenance of the stones used for Harlyn Jewellery is of prime importance to our brand.

We are a small team. I have been joined by my sister-in-law, Louise, who shares my passion for gemstones and jewellery. Louise is the daughter of a Geologist and the knowledge and teachings he passed down to Louise have been invaluable when curating the collections.

A big thanks to my talented daughter Beth who has used her media skills, photographing each piece of jewellery and designing the website.

The final member of our team is my rock and sounding block…….my husband Bill, who has managed the financial planning and stock management allowing us the creative time and space to develop the brand.

This is the start of an amazing journey for us and we hope that you love the collections as much as we do.
